North Dakota's main industries are agriculture, mineral production, and machinery manufacture.
Agriculture
Agriculture is the backbone of North Dakota's economy. It is the one of the leading producers of hard spring wheat, durum wheat, sunflowers, barley, oats, flax, all dry edible beans, and pinto beans. Processing of grain, meat, and dairy products are also major parts of the economy. North Dakota is also among the leading states in the production of canola seed, honey, navy beans, rye, soybeans and sugar beets
In fiscal year 2005, North Dakota’s cash farm receipts totaled $3.9 billion. North Dakota ranked ninth among all 50 states in 2005 with agricultural exports estimated at $2 billion.
The total number of farms has declined over the years as the average size of farming operations has increased. The average farm is 1,313 acres (531 hectares).
MINERALS
Mineral production has been increasing in North Dakota. These sectors include petroleum, sand and gravel, lime, and salt. North Dakota ranked 9th in crude oil production out of 31 oil producing states and two federal offshore areas,
There are also natural-gas fields. Underlying the western counties are lignite reserves; close to the lignite beds are deposits of clay of such varied types that they serve as both construction and pottery materials.
MANUFACTURING
The state's leading manufactured export category is machinery manufactures, which alone accounted for $817 million, or 54 percent of North Dakota's total export shipments in 2006. The machinery exports include compact construction and utility equipment, ruggedized electronic components, transportation equipment. Other manufactured export categories that registered large dollar growth chemical manufactures and fabricated. Some of the North Dakota big companies are Bobcat, CNH America, Phoenix International Corp, Integrity Windows By Marvin, Primewood, Fargo Assembly, and others.
TOURISM
Tourism has become North Dakota's third-ranking source of income, behind agriculture and mineral production.
